Wonderbag increases the disposable income of families by saving them money normally spent on cooking fuel, with one bag used regularly typically providing fuel savings of up to 70 percent. With families saving money on electricity and fuel, they can use this extra money to purchase food, grow their savings, start their own business, and improve their standard of living.
In addition to the money saved by the end users of Wonderbag, the production of our bags creates jobs in communities. Our two Centres of Excellence provide jobs, and Wonderbag works with women entrepreneurs in communities to develop factory and sewing collectives that produce Wonderbags and provide women with paid work.
Wonderbag actively promotes a sustainable business model by rewarding everyone involved from production to end-user, thereby doing our best to help reduce poverty in each community in which we operate.

Across Africa, studies show that women and girls spend three times longer than men on unpaid work such as cooking and household chores. Additional findings highlight that the number of girls who do at least two hours of unpaid work each day almost doubles after they reach the age of 15 - time that could be spent at school, in employment, or setting up their own business.
Our ‘Coalition of Good’ study in Ghana found that that one Wonderbag used regularly can give these women back up to 1,000 unpaid hours each year. Using a Wonderbag not only saves time on cooking, it reduces the time spent collecting firewood, with our data showing that the amount of cooking fuel required is cut by up to 70 percent.
With all these extra hours, Wonderbag provides women and girls with greater access to education. With better education, women and girls in lesser developed countries become better informed and have the ability to live a more empowered life.

A study carried out with Wonderbag users in South Africa users found that, when used regularly, the Wonderbag can reduce cooking fuel consumption by up to 70 percent. This fuel can now be used by families to boil water for human consumption.
An additional benefit is that, by utilizing Wonderbag’s heat-retention technology for slow-cooking meals, water evaporation is greatly reduced, and more water is left that the family can use for drinking. Our research highlighted that one Wonderbag can save families up to 1,000 litres of water each year. By improving water-use efficiency during the cooking process, Wonderbag helps to reduce the level of water scarcity for thousands of families in lesser developed countries.
As less water is used during the cooking process, less water needs to be purchased by families. This reduces the time women spend on long distance trips to collect water, time which they can put to better use by going to school, in employment, or starting their own business.

Each Wonderbag contains recycled foam chips to help retain heat within the bag. The recycled foam is a byproduct from other manufacturing processes, which would have otherwise been sent to landfill. As a result of utilizing this waste product, we reduce the number of new materials being used during production and play our part in responsible manufacturing.
As a business we made the decision to produce our bags in South Africa, the country where most of our end users are based, as a way of reducing the distance the bags need to travel. Reducing the distance from production to end user thereby helps to limit the carbon emissions which may occur during the transportation process.
Additionally, by producing the bags in the communities where they are most widely used, it also promotes sustainable consumption by supporting the local community through new jobs and entrepreneurship.

There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste estimated to be in our oceans. 269,000 tons float, 4 billion microfibers per km² dwell below the surface.
At Wonderbag we use recycled foam to retain the heat inside the bag. The foam we use is a byproduct from other manufacturing processes which would have otherwise been sent to the landfill. When rubbish is being transported to landfill, or even when it is inside the landfill, material such as foam is often blown away due to its light weight. From there, it can eventually clutter around drains and enter rivers and the sea.
Wonderbag further promotes protection of our marine and coastal ecosystems by collecting and replacing old or damaged Wonderbags with new Wonderbags, ensuring that the materials in our Wonderbags are also recycled and disposed of correctly so they don't find their way into our rivers and oceans.
One of the key targets for this goal is to substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity by 2030.

This goal looks at the importance of nature for human survival. The United Nations states that nature ‘provides us with our oxygen, regulates our weather patterns, pollinates our crops, produces our food, feed and fibre.’ It recognizes that our forests, wildlife, and habitats are under increasing stress, and are at serious risk as a result of human actions.

The World Health Organization recently announced that 2.6 billion people still cook using polluting open fires or simple stoves, thereby resulting in significant amounts of trees being cut down to be used as a source of cooking fuel. Wonderbag can help to reduce this problem by cutting the amount of cooking fuel required by up to 70 percent. Data from our user studies indicates that one Wonderbag can save up to five large trees from being cut down each year. By saving trees from deforestation, Wonderbag helps to prevent the devastating destruction of precious forests, wildlife and habitats.
Air pollution is also a significant threat to nature and human health. Many of the problems with air pollution can be attributed to inefficient cooking practices using open fires or polluting stoves. Each year, close to four million people die prematurely from illness linked to household air pollution from such cooking methods. By reducing the amount of harmful fuel that is required for cooking, Wonderbag can help limit the amount of black carbon and methane being produced, thereby improving air quality, reducing the carbon impact of cooking, and helping to prevent millions of respiratory deaths caused by cooking each year.

Providing clean cooking solutions to families in lesser developed countries not only helps to tackle the climate crisis, it also reduces the gender-based violence many women and girls are at risk of every day.
In the report published by the Clean Cooking Alliance, ‘Gender-Based Violence in Humanitarian Settings: Cookstoves and Fuels’, they highlight that on average, firewood collectors, who are predominantly women, walk more than five hours per trip to collect fuel to cook food for their families - risking physical and sexual assault, abuse, and injury.
By utilizing a Wonderbag for cooking, women and girls can reduce their cooking fuel consumption by up to 70 percent. As a result, less trips are required to collect firewood, therefore greatly reducing their risk of violence or abuse.
Cooking with a Wonderbag also provides the benefit of greater access to rich and heartwarming food. We have found that when families in refugee camps and upended communities start to use Wonderbags, there is reduced friction amongst inhabitants and the result is more peaceful communities.

Wonderbag has strong partnerships with the UN, with NGOs in communities, and many large corporations around the world. Partnerships are the only way to achieve success in a humanitarian and carbon neutral world, and these partnerships are at the core of how we operate as a business.
At Wonderbag we work with large corporations to secure carbon-investment, and then partner with NGOs and local communities to help distribute the Wonderbags to end users. We can’t tackle the climate crisis and gender inequality on our own, and nor should we try. It is collective action that brings about more effective and faster results. We will continue to grow our number of partnerships to ensure that we can get a Wonderbag into as many homes as possible, as quickly as possible. We invite you to join us on this amazing journey.
